Dear Internet

So I am doing a continuation of my previous love letter to the internet. Today I am thanking it for some of the beautiful things that it has brought to my attention. Now I recently discovered, after watching How I Met Your Mother, that Marshall Eriksen and I have something in common. I give my stamp of approval too easily. This has inspired me to be more selective in my editing process of amazing things that I find on the internet.
Here goes...

Epic Rap Battles of History
These are amazing. I could just post some but instead I will let you explore them for yourself. I will however recommend the battle between Hitler and Darth Vader.

The shower thing.
So wrong yet so very very funny.

Okay so this of course is just Natalie Portman but these pictures from the set of Thor in London last week really make it look like Kate Middleton and Thor are new BFF's. Just imagine the future queen of England chilling with hammer-wielding god of thunder. They'd probably talk about hair products (they both have good hair), the importance of a good belt (seriously she always wears a belt, maybe she gets half her strength from it too) and how to deal with their rogue brothers (in-law in Kate's case). Oh what a beautiful friendship that would be.

This little depiction came courtesy of the aptly named HelloGiggles series Illustrated Tweet of the Day. When I liked it on Facebook, my sister comment underneath "You started at 12... which means for your 30th you'll probably look like Dumbledore". Case and point.

Making me feel like I'm 13 again and polyphonic ringtones are all the rage. Ah, memories.

Currently obsessed with...

THE TRAILER FOR ARGO

Here are five reasons why the trailer for Argo looks fantastic.

1. The trailer indicated that the movie will contain Ben Affleck. Swoon. Not only in a leading role but in his first directorial role since The Town (which is very good if you haven't seen it). Swoon again.

2. The trailer contains Aerosmith's Dream On which I think is one of the greatest songs. Of. All. Time. I really do. I don't even like Aerosmith (do not get me started on I Don't Want to Miss a Tha-ang) but I think this song is the ultimate motivational song and it should be in way more movies and trailers and just general life situations. If anyone ever makes a movie of my life, I want Dream On to be the song played in the trailer. Or at my funeral. Whichever comes first.

3. It's based on a true story. Read more about The Canadian Caper.

4. Alongside Ben Affleck, the trailer contains the following actors: Bryan Cranston, Chris Messina, Alan Arkin, Victor Garber, John Goldman and a man who according to IMDB is called Scoot McNairy. I don't actually know this actor Scoot McNairy but I just like the fact that his name is Scoot McNairy. Scoot McNairy.

5. The general plot of the movie. It just looks like something I will really love. I don't even care if it gets bad reviews and turns out to be really crap (which I really do not think will be the case). It's two hours watching Ben Affleck with a beard. Happy camper I am.

The Uncommon Oscar

The other day I had another look at the dresses of the past award season. Going through them and still standing by my decision that Octavia Spencer's Oscar dress was the most well-chosen dress of the  entire award season, I realised that this year was pretty short of risk-takers on the red carpet. This prompted me to compile a list mini-list of my favourite Oscar unusual dress choices.
First on my list and rivaling Martha Plimpton for the spot as my absolute favourite is Carey Mulligan's 2010 choice of a strapless Prada gown adorned with miniature kitchen utensils. When Mulligan, who had been tipped for Best Actress, arrived, few people knowing what to make of her cutlery adorned frock with the Huffington post claiming that she wore "a long black Prada number bejeweled with flowers, studs ... and what looks like nuts, bolts, forks and knives".

image via google.images.com

The Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy dress that Cate Blancett sported at the 2011 Oscars was the subject of some debate. This Japanese warrior costume inspired dress is from what is quite probably my favourite couture collection ever (alongside YSL's Spring 2002 career retrospective) so I am possibly a little biased. Still though I think that Blancett's risky choice deserves a lot of kudos. The intricate beading and brazen colour pop showed that being 40 plus shouldn't deter Hollywood women for making a fashionable statement. This is aided hugely by the fact that Cate Blancett looks like Cate Blancett and could therefore wear a potato sack and still be utterly gorgeous.

image via google.images.com

When a dress can be described as mermaid-meets-Vegas bride it does not inspire confidence in the either the wearer or designer. However when Marion Cotillard arrived at the 2008 Oscar ceremony (at which she won Best Actress for her role as Édith Piaf in La Vie En Rose) in this Jean Paul Gaultier number, mermaid-meets-Vegas bride suddenly did not sound so bad. Although I would have forgone the navel-length necklace, I do think this dress is a show-stopper. With a nigh-on Veronica Lake hairstyle and the rosy lips, Cotillard definitely scored highly for this one.

image via google.images.com

Diane Keaton's 2004 Oscars outfit caused quite a stir. While I probably wouldn't wear this Ralph Lauren morning suit and bowler hat myself, the reason this has landed itself on my list is because of the absolute balls it took to wear this outfit on any red carpet not just at the Academy Awards. I'd like to see any actress today attempt to wear this, as nowadays it seems like that in 2012 a 'red-carpet risk' involves shock tactics rather than the attempt to be innovative or fashion forward. Like it or not though, you cannot deny that Miss Keaton is undoubtedly pulling it off. She became the queen of menswear with the release of Annie Hall back in 1977 and still is an icon of androgyny and even though this is a little too chancy for my liking, Keaton proves that with a confident smile and a bit of a nonchalant attitude, you can pull off pretty much anything.

image via google.images.com
Now to my personal favourite.

In 1989, River Phoenix was nominated for an Oscar for his part in the movie Running on Empty. To the Oscar ceremony, he brought his nineteen year old co-star and current girlfriend Martha Plimpton. Late 80s fashion was a time of experimentation, and apparently it seemed like a good idea to conduct these experiments on the red carpet. If you don't believe me just look at Demi Moore self-designed tapestry/bicycle shorts fiasco. Martha Plimpton however got it just right. Mixing one of the most glamourous items of clothing of all time - a 1940s style bias-cut dress, a favourite of the likes of Jean Harlow - with the androgyny of slicked back hair, Plimpton put a new spin on the a classic Hollywood look. Completely unadorned with jewellery, the main focus of the Plimpton's look was how an iconic Hollywood starlet dress can be juxtaposed by a nod to the emergence of the Grunge subculture in the late 80s and early 90s. A definite unexpected look at the Oscars and one that Rooney Mara, in her post Dragon Tattoo glow, seems to be channelling.

Movie of the Week: The Avengers (Marvel's Avengers Assemble)

More like movie of the year!! Because I am lazy and should technically be studying, I have just posted the review that I wrote for Galway.Studeny.me that you can read HERE even though it is not different at all, except that this one has more pictures. So yeah here it is...

Avengers Assemble: Does It Really Live Up To All The Hype?

In short, yes it does. The Avengers – or Avengers Assemble as it is known here to avoid confusion with the 1960s TV series – was forecasted to be the biggest film of the year and after witnessing it tonight in all its glory, I wouldn’t hesitate to bet on it. With plans for The Avengers stretching as far back as 2005, speculation was rife as to how the movie would turn out.
Directed by Joss Whedon – perhaps most widely known for his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer – and with a screenplay by Whedon and Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four), the film has already been regarded as a success by Marvel fans as well as regular cinemagoers alike. The movie is one giant sequel to the previous Marvel movies featuring the key characters. Most notably Thor as the events take place a year after and are a direct result of the effects of Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) visit to earth. Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s adopted brother, steals the Tesseract – an alien source of renewable energy – and intends to use its power to bring his extraterrestrial army of Chitauri to earth to enslave mankind. This is bad. Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), the man behind S.H.I.E.L.D, brings together the mixed bag of heroes in order to stop Loki’s plans. This is good. The team consists of Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Thor and finally two master assassins; Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye/Clint Barton.
The fear, with a production like this, is that one character might end up taking on a dominating role over the rest of the team. (I am looking at you Mr. Stark). However Whedon managed to give each one of the Avengers team members their own time in the spotlight without detracting from the overall story. By the end of it, you will even feel appropriately acquainted with Hawkeye who unlike the other Avengers heroes did not feature in film before (excluding his brief cameo in last year’s Thor).
And now 3D or not 3D? For that is the very important question. If you decide to go for the 3D option then you will probably wonder for the first half hour why you bothered. It does however improve. Dramatically. The movie is very decisively divided into three acts. The first act – less action, shorter scenes, more dialogue – does not bode nicely with the 3D and it is understandably where the source of negative 3D reviews originates. However as for the following acts you will be glad that you forked out the extra bob for the glasses. As the movie was not initially filmed in 3D, but instead subsequently converted, it is expected that it is not exactly going to make you jump out of your seat. If you’re not a 3D snob, go for it; if you are, then don’t; and if, like me, you intend to see this more in the cinema more than once, then you might as well mix it up.
Perhaps the most endearing feature of this 145-minute extravaganza is that it does not take itself too seriously or at least it succeeds in giving that impression. The Avengers is easy on the bloodshed and generous with the comedy continuing the tone of the individual character movies that preceded it. It does not contain a hidden message or cryptic meaning but instead it is exactly what it promises to be: a really good superhero movie.

P.S. There is a short scene after the credits. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Stand your ground (or remain in your seat) while everyone else shuffles out around you. Stay until the bitter end!

Now some stills from the movie.

And finally, Thor, because Thor is played by Chris Hemsworth, who is pretty much a god in his own right.

10 Summer Movies I'm Excited To See

1. The Avengers
Top of my list and with the closest release date, inconveniently on the day of my first exam. Expect a Movie of the Week post when I eventually get to see it! My usual cinema buddy refuses to go after I dragged her to The Wrath of the Titans and at this stage I would even go with that lady on Shop Street who always asks if you speak English and if you say yes she launches into this thing about money and she always has a shopping bag with cans of cider in it, so if you're reading this lady, I will literally take you to the cinema. I'll even pay for your ticket, and popcorn too! It is released on the 26th which as, I mentioned, is the day of my first exam of the four that will take place between the next Thursday and the following Friday. I may have to wait until I return home to see it unfortunately. *sad face*

2. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
I am quite excited to see a vampire movie that doesn't involve Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson. Also the tagline "Are you a patriot or a vampire?" is quite outstanding. Coming to us in August.

3. Ted
Let's face it. Who doesn't want to see a movie about a teddy bear, voiced by Seth McFarlane (Family Guy), who gets high, curses and is a bit of a player with the ladies?! Also starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. Set for release in July.

4. Dark Shadows
Johnny Depp finally taking on a much anticipated role as a vampire in Tim Burton's re-imagining the cult late 60s/early 70s tv show and the subsequent 1991 streamlined version. Starring Chloe Moretz, a ravishing blonde Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer and of course Helena Bonham Carter. May 11th.

5. To Rome With Love
Woody Allen, Jesse Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin. It's like someone said "you know there's this girl in Galway who loves Woody Allen films, is a big fan of Alec Baldwin and has a bit of a crush on Jesse Eisenberg. Let's make a movie just for her". And they did. Hopefully coming to Galway at the end of this month. Fingers crossed!

6. A Fantastic Fear of Everything
Simon Pegg's mix of fantasy and reality about a paranoid children's author trying to make the the transition into a crime novelist looks like it will be quite spectacular. Out at the beginning June.

7. Take This Waltz
Since seeing this movie listed on IMDB as still the state of in pre-production, I have been quite excited. Adore Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams. June 7th.

8. Men in Black 3
Will Smith going back in time to a young K played by Josh Brolin (who recently appeared in SNL, I might add). May 25th.

9. The Dark Knight Rises
No explanation needed. 20th of July. Oh yeah.

10. Lola Versus
A indie take on the usual girl-gets-jilted-shortly-before-wedding story. With Greta Gerwig who is set to be the next big things and a string of men, this looks like it could turn out to be a genuinely funny movie. Set for a June release.

20/4/2012 EDIT: I am mortally embarrassed and quite ashamed of myself that I forgot to include Moonrise Kingdom on this list! I am a huge Wes Anderson fan and although I have been raving about the impending release of his latest movie, I somehow managed to forget once I sat down to create this post. To make up for this awful mistake I have included this exclusive clip, only released today, featuring the fantastic Jason Schwartzman.

Fashion's Current Obsession

... is also mine. Fashion videos have been all the rage for the past few years and they are something of which I cannot get enough. So here, if you have some time to spare, are a handful of my favourites.

Nick Knight's hologram for Alexander McQueen's Autumn 2006 collection featuring Kate Moss has become a pretty iconic image for both McQueen, Moss, Knight and subsequently Flake with their ad from last year that you can see HERE.

The second of three Nick Knight videos here is yet again for Lee McQueen.

A short film for Mango Touch line and Werelse accessories, that is coming to stores this week, featuring Spanish actress Rossy de Palm and the gorgeous trio of incredibly influential bloggers:
Chiara Ferragni of theblondesalad.com
Andy Torres stylescrapbook.com
Carolina Engman of fashionsquad.com
All of whom had a hand in creating the collection.

Lara Stone using some spectacular self defense techniques on Nick Knight, all the while rocking the fabulous stylings of Carine Roitfeld. C'est magnifique!

I remember reading about this video a couple a years ago in British Vogue and being totally transfixed when I found it online. It's really beautiful and I adore the voiceover too.

Gabilo's "Melancholy" is a collection of pieces from the Autumn 2011 collection.

And finally...
These videos are not really fashion films but they are incredible and every so often I take a wee look at them because they are quite magnificent. Last year The New York Times brought together some of Hollywood's finest to create a series called Touch of Evil, which involved said crop of talent bringing some of cinema's most villainous characters back to life.

Well I hope you enjoyed these because as far as procrastination goes, this is one of the best forms!

Movie of the Week: Project X

So after last week's debut Movie of the Week post, I decided to follow it up with my most recent cinema outing to see Project X.

image via google.images.com
Project X is basically every mad night you've ever had, ever heard about and ever watched all in one.
This high school meets major debauchery meets disaster movie is from the producers of The Hangover movies, Old School and Due Date and stars a bunch of relatively unknown young actors. There was only guy in the whole thing that I actually recognised and I am too ashamed to admit from where. Okay it was Footloose the abominable remake.
So Project X is nothing less of amazing. Of course it will get mixed reviews because it's about a bunch of teenagers throwing a party but I think that if you even look past the storyline of the whole thing, it is actually a exceptionally well produced movie. The soundtrack is so good, downloaded already! The editing and actual filming of the movie is fantastic. I think that the idea to film it all on a hand-held camera and camera phones was such an inspired idea because it really reflects the whole kind of zeitgeist of people posting videos on Youtube and FB. It also brings you right into the movie Blair Witch style. Now this may be because my friends and I were sitting right into the front row. While the front row has glamorous connotations for anything fashion related, for the cinema it doesn't. If you do decide to go and see this movie I really recommend sitting in the front row because well, you'll just have to see for yourself!

This movie is apparently based on the phenomenon that was Corey's Party which took place a couple of yeas ago in Melbourne Australia. If you haven't heard about this before then click HERE. I saw a video on Youtube the other day that showed Corey's "apology" and to be honest he was a total asshole! The main character in Project X is a bit of a nerd and he's quite sweet so you are definitely rooting for him the whole movie which I think is important for the whole storyline of the movie.
I would most definitely watch this movie again. I would literally watch it tomorrow! Have way through the movie you'll be like "all I want to do is throw a party and listen to party rap music and drink shots and form dance circles and stuff!" and then towards the end of the movie you'll be like "I am never throwing a party. Ever". It has a happy ending though! I promise!

Also if you're in the Galway area then you will have undoubtedly heard about the RAG week antics last month. The lads at FlipSave made this incredible video which pretty much sums up the madness of it all!

Movie of the Week

So I have decided to start doing a movie of the week post because, well, I watch a lot of movies.

This week's Movie Of The Week is Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's Paul. I didn't see this movie when it originally came out into the cinema and it took me a while to actually take the time to watch it and to honest I do regret not watching it sooner because it is quite fantastic. It's nice to see an alien, close encounter etc type movie redone in a new way. The overall plot of the movie is not unfamiliar and that is the charm of it; they play on alien movie clichés and use them to their strengths.

I will do a quick summing up for anyone who hasn't seen the movie. So Graham (Pegg) and Clive (Frost) are two British sci-fi enthusiasts who have made the trip from the UK to San Diego for the annual Comic-Con. While there, they decide to take a bit of a road trip around the supernatural landmarks of the states (I guess that's what you'd call them). While on this trip they encounter Paul, who after having been 60 years on planet decides that it is time to return home. The geeks take him on board their RV and in doing so the adventure really begins. While on the road they meet the bible thumping Ruth played by my girl-crush Kristen Wiig, the special agent Zoil played by Jason Bateman and the not-so-special agents whose names I can't remember played by Bill Hader and Joe Lo Truglio.

The character of Paul, voiced by one of my idols, Seth Rogen, is most definitely the best alien I have seen on the screen since E.T. He is however most definitely not a cheap copy of E.T. Instead though, Paul is everything that you would expect from an alien having spent 60 years on Earth, kicking back and advising both the government and the entertainment industry on matters extraterrestrial-related and otherwise. He smokes with a trooper, curses like a sailor and gets high like various other stereotypes. Seth Rogen, like he has done so in movies before, creates the perfect balance between being foul-mouthed and then caring and sweet. He, in my opinion, stole the show.

As far as the actual jokes themselves go, to be honest, I think if had not have been for the exceptional cast, then the movie would probably have sunk into oblivion as just being a good CGI project but nothing else. You would expect more than jokes about anal probes and being gay from the guys who brought you Hot Fuzz and Spaced. Don't get me wrong I laughed a lot, but i just expected more than gay jokes that's all. It still is a really really good laugh though so I would highly recommend it.

Overall Rating 7/10

Six People I Would Marry

This is a shamelessly self-indulgent post about famous people I would marry.
In no particular order...

SETH MEYERS
Just so I could make him read the newspaper to be every morning over breakfast. Also he's quite a cutie.

JASON SEGEL
Long time crush. See my life plan

JEREMY CLARKSON
He is my ultimate older man crush. Well everyone on this list is older than me but since Mr. Clarkson is old enough to be my father, I think that needs justification. Even though people call him a chauvinist, a racist, and a grumpy old man, I don't care. I still would.

RYAN REYNOLDS
Needs absolutely no explanation.

GREGORY PECK
With the imminent invention of time travel, I will be on that.

KRISTEN WIIG
Ultimate girl crush right there. I would settle for BFF's though.
all images via google.images.com
I wouldn't put Ryan Gosling on the list because I would want him to still have an air of mystery about him. Obviously he would be my bit on the side. Obviously.

anjelica

"Oh, all kinds of lunacy happens in Ireland, all kinds of lunacy.”
This is one of my favourite things said by one of my favourite actors.

Anjelica Huston, I do adore you!

Being an enormous fan of Wes Anderson also helps as she has starred in three of his six feature length films, perhaps most famously as Etheline Tenenbaum in 2001. I believe that she is undoubtedly one of the most talented actresses of the late 20th century and 21st century. Most recently I saw her in Jonathon Levine's (who I have had a teensy weensy crush on since The Wackness) 50/50 with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon Levitt. She played JGL's mother and, I think anyway, that she got the perpetually worried mother of a too-young cancer victim down to an absolute tee! On top of everything else, she also has ties with not only Galway but also NUIG. Back in 2003, NUIG established a Digital and Media School called, no less, The Huston School named after John Huston, the Oscar winning director/father of Anjelica. John Huston's personal archives also found a home in the NUIG library. Anjelica is the third generation of Oscar winners in her family. Walter Huston, her grandfather, won an Oscar in 1949 and was nominated for three others. Aside from the the NUIG connection, the Huston family also have a history with Galway. Apparently as a child, Huston grew up in St Clerans House, Craughwell, outside Galway city.
I took a seminar in Cinema and Media Studies in the Huston School - which unless you are given instructions as to where it is, you're pretty much guaranteed that you'll never find it - and despite being aware of the whole Huston family connection for some reach, and a little embarrassingly I kept calling it Hudson. But maybe after this post I will have it so drilled it my head that I could not possibly call it the incorrect name again.
Huston. Huston. Huston. Hudson. Huston Huston.

While doing some Google searches for images of Anjelica in NUI, I came across these positively amazing editorial shots of Anjelica Huston modeling Valentino in the early seventies.

all images via www.iamlexaco.com

It was photographed by the late Bob Richardson and co-stars a slightly androgynous male model who reminds me a little of the currently exorbitantly-en-vogue Andrej Pejic.

17/1/2012 EDIT:
Anjelica Huston will also be starring in Smash, Steven Spielberg's take on the current obsession with all things musical theatre. She will be playing Eileen Rand the producer of the musical that the show is based around. On top of everything else the musical that she is producing is about the life of my ultimate icon, Miss Marilyn Monroe. The show will also star Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee and Uma Thurman. HERE is the trailer is you'd like to check it out. It's due to air at the beginning of February.

she had nothing human about her, just mystery

I have for a very long time been a fan of Edie Sedgwick and consider this November past was the fortieth anniversary of her death, I have decided to do a post about her.
I don't know when I first became aware of Andy Warhol but art has always been an important thing in my house so I guess I was probably introduced to the man himself as a child. As a kid though I probably didn't understand his art but as I got a bit older I started to appreciate it. When The Eternal Now: Warhol and The Factory 1963-1968 came to Sligo back in October of 2007, my mum and dad were given tickets to the opening night. I attended with them, with two friends of mine from boarding school and with the three of us being the only people there under the age of 40, an absolute blast was had!
While drinking tons of champagne and enjoying the oysters (ugh!), we trotted around the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, admiring the work of our man Andy.

It was a unanimous decision that the Silver Clouds instillation, created in conjunction with electrical engineer Billy Kluver, was our personal favourite as it kept us entertained throughout the night, while all of the adults chatted amongst themselves.

Seeing Factory Girl back in 2006 was, I'd say, my first introduction to Miss Sedgwick and her tragic, yet iconic, life. Having seen Edie portrayed by Jennifer Rubin in The Doors and by Michelle Williams in I'm Not There under the pseudonym CoCo Rivington, I do think that Sienna Miller's portrayal of her was truly fantastic. The image below of Edie balancing on the leather rhino is one of my favourites and I am constantly reblogging it on Tumblr. I also really like the promo shot of Sienna Miller striking the same pose.

Edie Sedgwick has been a style icon for decades and in my opinion she will continue to be for a long time as she embodies 1960s chic. Back at the beginning of the summer when I lobbed off all my hair, a friend of mine said it was kind of Edie Sedgwick-ish which I did not discourage.

friends with benefits

As a special treat after my exam I watched the most who-larious movie. Friends With Kids. Watch it. Seriously. It is amaze balls. I may be a little biased though because I do have a bit of a thing for Chris O'Dowd.
Read on though and maybe you'll be convinced beyond the whole Chris O'Dowd thing.

image via google.images.com
Also after Bridesmaids who can resist the Kirsten Wiig-Chris O'Dowd-Maya Rudolph-John Hamm combination?
I have to say that the constant banter between the main characters (the above foursome plus Jennifer Westfeldt and Adam Scott) is probably the best banter ever written. Also the best awkward sex-scene I have ever scene. You actually want to yell at them to shut the f**k up and have sex already! It is like a really really hilarious friends with benefits situation.

And then... on top of everything  it is written and directed by a girl. And a pretty girl at that. Now I am probably the last person on the planet who is in any way at all feminist inclined. I'm all for working mums and "sisters are doing it for themselves" and all that, but a bra-burner I am not. However when Bridesmaids came out last year everyone was like 'Uh can a girl actually be funny?' And personally I think they can. I know tons of girls who are genuinely funny and I don't mean haha-funny, palling about with friends funny, I mean could-be-on-the-stage funny. And this women completely backs up that point.

So who, I hear you ask, is the fantabulous woman?

image via google.images.com
Jennifer Westfeldt. I think she and Kirsten Wiig are really making 2011 about the funny woman. Keep a lookout for her.

Megan Fox is in it too and as per usual she is in the kind of role that any actress could have played. I shall not give away anything more though because you have to watch it.

Also Emily from Gilmore Girls played by Kelly Bishop who I think is just fantastic is in it very briefly which is also great.

Just make sure you watch it. Friends With Kids is so great.

Also the very handsome man that is Edward Burns features in it. What a beaut.

fitzgerald's girl

image via firstshowing.net
As anyone who knows me will know I am a serious F. Scott Fitzgerald fan. Seriously. For a few seconds though, I will digress and talk about the subject matter of another movie that is very close to my heart.

My sister has been teasing me over the past few weeks about how I apparently am counting down the sleeps until My Week with Marilyn is released. She's not wrong. I really am very excited to see it; mainly to scrutinise Michelle Williams's portrayal of the flaxen-haired icon (but also a little bit because I think Eddie Redmayne is divine). When I saw the first photos of Williams, I was not entirely convinced. Then once I saw the trailer and I was even less convinced.

However that was until I came across this video (above) of Williams performing "Heatwave" from There's No Business Like Show Business. I finally started to warm to the idea of yer won from Dawson's Creek playing the ultimate icon of the 20th century. I do have to hand it to her though, you need some set of balls to take on a role like that. I have seen so many TV movies and have never been wholly in favour of them. The only person who I have been remotely convinced by is, surprisingly, Anna Nicole Smith in her infamous "Gentlemen prefer fur-free Blondes" PETA campaign.
image via peta.org
Anywho back to Williams, after seeing that video of "Heatwave" I began to really really look forward to seeing her playing Marilyn. After seeing dozens of actresses trying their hand at the breathy beauty, I did like the TV mini series that adapted Joyce Carol Oates's immense dramatisation of MM's life. Both the novel and said mini series were named Blonde. I have read this massive novel on numerous occasions because it is just so insanely detailed that it's hard to believe it's not Marilyn herself. The mini series featured a young Australian called Poppy Montgomery in the role of MM and she was also pretty good. It's rumoured that said adaptation is going to be embalmed in celluloid with the lovely Naomi Watts as the lead. Unfortunately though I have found it pretty hard to find out any more information about this.

Now to my man Gatsby.

Ahh.

The Great Gatsby. The costumes?! Think of the costumes!!

Although I was not particularly thrilled about Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, after seeing these pictures I now have a new-found appreciation for his goofy face. I personally would have preferred someone like Luke Wilson but I guess I can't have everything. I was also very excited, when I initially heard they were remaking this, at the prospect of Ben Affleck playing Tom Buchanan but they have Sir Gawain for King Arthur otherwise known as Joel Edgerton who ain't half bad looking either. Carrie Mulligan as the lovely Daisy Buchanan? Well what is there to say? Except for the fact that the cute to boot Isla Fischer is paying the rival for her husband's affections: the ill-fated Myrtle. Ah! Too excited!
My only major concern is the fact that Baz Luhrmann is directing it. If anyone has had the pleasure of enduring Austraila then they will understand my anxiety. And it's in 3D...

Which I find slightly questionable...

I am however elated that they don't have Dominic Cooper in it. He irritates me. A lot. He is almost as annoying to look at as Nicolas Cage.
Hopefully he doesn't spoil Milton Greene for me.
